Verruca

What is Verrutop?

Verrutop is a relatively new product used for the treatment of warts and verrucae. It uses a Nitrizinc complex to mummify and dry out the verruca cell tissue, helping to.

Who is it suitable for?

Verrutop is best suited for either raised verrucae/warts which occur on the top of the foot or toes, or smaller more superficial verrucae. If someone has a large, long-standing verruca, other treatment options may be better.

Unsuitable for:

Children under 6 years

Pregnant or breast feeding women

A person with arteriopathy and/or peripheral neuropathies such as diabetes

Inflamed skin, malignant cutaneous tumours, flat warts, freckles or keloids.

What can I expect?

During your appointment, the verruca will be assessed and treated. Firstly, the overlying hard skin will be removed with a scalpel (this is usually painless, it may bleed sometimes which is normal). The Verrutop is applied with the applicator directly to the verruca/verrucae to be treated. The process is repeated a few times and then left to dry. A dressing may be applied.

Does it hurt?

The application of the Verrutop treatment is usually completely painless. Some people feel a burning or stinging sensation but this goes the same day.

How many treatments are required?

The manufacturer states that most people require 3-6 sessions of which each session is carried out every 1-2 weeks to eradicate the verruca. It is usually not advisable to have more than 6 treatments. If the verruca has not cleared after 6 treatments then an alternative treatment may be discussed.

How effective is it?

The manufacturer of Verrutop states the efficacy of the treatment is 90% with a maximum of six treatments. So although it has a high efficacy rate it is still not a guaranteed 100% cure, like every other verruca treatment option available.

What if I have more than one verruca?

If you have more than one verruca the treatment can be applied to each, as long as there is sufficient Verrutop to cover them all. If, for example, you have several verrucae and a large verruca then you may need 2 vials of Verrutop.

What can I expect after?

Verrutop aims to slowly shrink the verruca and clear the offending lesion over the course of treatment.

Between appointments, you need to apply surgical spirits twice a day to the treated verruca to help dry it out and aid the effectiveness of the Verrutop. Avoid long baths/showers or similar and don’t touch or pick the area between treatments.

It is normal for the verruca tissue to change colour to yellow, brown or black after the treatment.
